Catron County Area InformationCatron County is centrally located on the state's western border, right on the Continental Divide. It lies in the heart of some of the most spectacular country in the Southwest, just to the north of the Gila Wilderness area, the oldest declared wilderness in the U.S. The terrain consists predominately of mountain and high mesas with extensive plain regions in the north and east.
Catron County is New Mexico's largest county and has a land area that encompasses 6,928 square miles. More than half the land is designated as one of three national forests (Gila, Cibola, and Apache), making the population density only 0.5 persons per square mile.
